１ヶ月前に大石農園をウーフのウェブサイトで見つけるまで、私は対馬のことについて全然何も知りませんでした。「対馬」という島が世界に存在することすらしりませんでした。

今、大石農園を見つけて、大石さん達に家に尋ねさせて頂きわたしはすごくうれしいです。

最初の日から皆さん信じられない程親切で思いやりがあり楽しくてとてもよかったです。対馬は住心地は良くて、対馬の人たちはは心が優しくでまったりで見えを張らない人たちです。ここにいながらした仕事は大変でしたが実になり、汗ばまむことがと楽しかったです。お茶の収穫や、紅茶と煎茶の生産や、柚子木の手入れや、日本の家の建築や、猪と鹿と葛が島に植えたものを全部壊したいことや、色々な食べ物の育ち方などについて私は少しずつ習ってきました。

仕事以外では、ここに着いてから友達になった人と一緒に遊ぶのは当然で何度もたくさん楽しみました。子供達とあそんだり、食事の間で家族と話し合おうとしたり、夏祭りで楽しんだりフットサルや森林浴や川遊びやギターや高校野球の見物など快を貪りました。みなさんが私のような赤の他人を快く家族に加えてくれたおかげで、たくさん素晴らしいい思い出を作れました。

しかも、私が対馬いた時間帯は頭にも難し方です。よくアメリカで考えずする務めは日本語で分かるお事が奮闘なりました。。私が日本人の十倍遅く基本的な考えを述べようとしながらみなさんが辛抱強く待っていて助けてくれたおかげで、私の日本語はぐんぐん進歩できました。もちろんまだたくさんべんきょうがのこりますけれどやはり説明できないくらい嬉しいです！私の彼女は日系アメリカ人で、彼女の家族と話し合えるようになりたく、彼女と一緒に日本語を話せる子供を育てられるようになりたく、できるだけ日本語を学ぶためにこの夏日本に来ました。私だけでなく、私たちの将来の家族を思い 、絶えず私の勉強を助けてくださった大石さん達と他の友達と対馬の島へ感謝の気持ちをお送ります。

そろそろアメリカに帰らないといけないことが悲しくて、またなるべくはやく戻りたいです。

I didn’t know much about Tsushima before I found Ooishikouen on the WWOOF website a little over a month ago. In fact, I didn’t even know Tsushima existed. 

Now, I am extremely glad that I found out about Ooishikoen, and that the Ooisihi family invited to come work with them, and welcomed me into their home.

From day one, everyone here has been kind, fun, patient, and encouraging. Tsushima is an extremely pleasant place to be, and the people of Tsushima are so laid back and happy and thoughtful. The work here has been challenging and rewarding, sweaty and fun. I learned a bit about harvesting and produced green and black tea, about taking care of yuzu trees, and about how to grow a variety of foods on an island where deer, wild boar, and kudzu try to destroy every thing you plant. 

Aside from the work, I have of course also enjoyed all of the fun times I have spent with everyone I’ve met since I’ve been here. From playing with the kids, to chatting with the family during meals, to summer celebrations and indoor soccer matches and forest hikes and river swimming and playing music and watching high school baseball and more, I have made so many wonderful memories since I’ve been here, all thanks to everyone’s being so willing to include me, a total stranger, in their everyday lives.

My time here has also been constantly mind-expanding, as I toiled every day in Japanese to understand and complete tasks that in English I would normally do without thinking twice. My Japanese has improved leaps and bounds since coming here, because everyone has been so understanding and patient and helpful and encouraging as I struggled to express basic thoughts, taking 10 times longer to speak than everyone else. Of course I still have a lot more to learn, but nonetheless I am inexplicably excited!  I came to Japan this summer with the sole purpose of learning as much Japanese as possible, because my girlfriend is Japanese American and I want to be able to speak with her family, and to help her raise children who can speak Japanese. So on behalf of not just myself, but also her, her family, and our future family: Thank you to the Oishi family, to friends and relatives, and to the whole island of Tsushima, for doing your best to help me learn!

I am already very sad about leaving, and I’m already looking forward to coming back. I just hope that I won’t have to wait too long.
